Week 4

Products page

During the 4th week I started to work on the products page. I also added some backend logic to automatically generate the navbar for each page, to see where you are currently at:

The product showcase was the most difficult part, as it needs to be scrollable to possibly fit more products in the future and to look good and fit all products on mobile:

The mobile menu got a small upgrade as well:

3-day Easter weekend

In Estonia only Good Friday and Easter Sunday are public holidays, so no Easter Monday for me sadly.

But even during the holiday most shops and stores stayed open, which was kind of odd to see. The smaller shops and museums were closed, but bigger stores and chains were still open as usual.

I took my free time to rest and to go out for the time during my trip. On Friday I went to an event at “Paavli Kultuurivabrik”, which translates to “The Pope’s Cultural Factory”, which I found kind of funny.

Compared to Berlin the busses and trams do not operate during the night, so when I went home I just took a Bolt scooter. Did you know that Bolt is from Tallinn? That’s why you can see their scooters and cars everywhere and they also offer Bolt Food for food delivery here. #NoAd

On Sunday I did a small trip to Pikakari beach and Paljassaare peninsula, as the weather was really good (for Estonian conditions, so about 13 degrees). From the beach you can have a great view of Tallinn:

Paljassaare is a beautiful conservation and bird watching area, I can highly recommend visiting it when the weather is good and you want to explore a bit of nature and the sea not too far away from the city:

Week 3

Improving the mobile view

During the third week I mostly spent my time at work optimizing the website for mobile. This meant making elements on the website responsive and resize properly to adapt to the smaller screen size (and width in particular).

The menu also needed to be redone to be useable on a phone:

At the end of the week I migrated the project to Flask, so that I can reuse different components on differents pages and also build in some logic using Python.

Since I already have some experience with Python, this seems like a nice step to put my knowledge to good use.

I’ve never used Flask before, but the current Zubax website is build using Flask and it has some nice templating features using the Jinja templating engine. It is relatively easy to learn in comparison to a fully features web framework like Django for example, which would be overkill for this project.

Linnahall and the Baltic Sea

On Saturday the weather was finally getting better, even though it was still only about 3-5 °C. But atleast the sun was out, so it didn’t feel as cold.

I took another stroll around the medieval city walls with the goal to get a glimpse of the Baltic Sea. Close to the sea is the now abandoned Linnahall, a venue originally built for the Moscow Olympics in 1980. From there I had a great view on the Baltic Sea as well as over the city:

On Sunday I decided to rewatch Dune Part Two, because when I watched it in Germany I came late and missed the beginning, and I wanted to watch in IMAX again anyways.

Luckily Tallinn has an IMAX theatre, and to my surprise I could buy the movie ticket online using Bitcoin Lightning. You wouldn’t ever see that in Germany ;)
